I don't think Clark is simply “the villain” or a bad person. To me, he's a much more tragic character. The guy had a pretty difficult life, his career failed, his business didn't work out, his marriage fell apart too, and he ended up practically alone. Obviously, he was also responsible for some of those things, and coming home drunk and verbally abusing his wife was wrong, but that doesn't automatically mean he's an evil person. In fact, Clark tries to get help by seeing a therapist, so at some point he clearly did want to change. Then he discovers the Backrooms and finds a place where he can escape from all his problems, and eventually reaches the point of saying, “I don't think I want to change.” To me, that doesn't mean “I'm evil and I don't want to change,” but rather “I'm tired of trying to fix a life that I feel is already ruined.” I also don't think he took Kat and her boyfriend there knowing they were going to die, because he hadn't directly encountered the Pirate yet. The only thing he had seen was that the place was strange, like when the furniture was thrown around. It was irresponsible, but not necessarily premeditated murder. Besides, when he decides to stay in the Backrooms, it doesn't seem like he's abandoning a family or a bunch of friends who love him, since he was so alone that he actually called his therapist to say goodbye. And if the Pirate represents everything bad about Clark, his guilt and everything he's trying to escape from, then it makes sense that when he finally accepts that some things were his fault, the Pirate stops being simply a reflection of him and starts attacking him. To me, Clark isn't a perfect person, but he's not a villain either. He's a guy who had bad luck, made bad decisions, tried to change, and eventually gave up and chose to escape. You can understand why he ended up that way without justifying everything he did.
