I can explain this one to nt’s. Loud sounds in public have many sources. Loud music reduces the number of sources to one. Because the filtering process is the choke point with auditory processing issues, its amount of sources, not db that matter when comparing, and when you add in the competition of loud sounds in public, as they try to be heard over each other, it becomes even more difficult to sort the important bits that you want to hear, which leaves you feeling vulnerable. Similar experience that they could have, and so can mentally process, would be (warning, if you have a brain that auto gives you an experience that is described, don’t read the rest of the post, it’s not a good experience I’m about to describe, just take it as a given that an example exists here and move on) staring at a garish outfit where the colours all clash and the patterns are ambiguous, and they can’t close their eyes. A short time is fine, then they start to get a headache from their brain trying to force it into order. 10 mins in, they are starting to develop a migraine and their brain is still trying to pull in more processing power to make sense of it all, and now they need to lie down.
