Adenomyosis and endometriosis are NOT the same thing. And that difference matters when we talk about treatment. With adenomyosis, the disease involves the muscular wall of the uterus, the myometrium. We can see inflammation, fibrosis, thickening of the uterine muscle and, in some women, enlargement of the uterus. Unlike endometriosis lesions, we can’t simply surgically excise adenomyosis from the uterine wall. So when I’m working with adenomyosis naturopathically, I’m very clear about what we’re actually trying to achieve. We can work on modifiable factors. We can support inflammation and pain management, nutritional status and iron deficiency associated with heavy menstrual bleeding. Herbal medicine may also form part of an individualised symptom management plan. But I’m not going to tell you that a herb or supplement can magically remove adenomyosis from the uterine wall. Hysterectomy remains the definitive treatment for adenomyosis, but that absolutely does NOT mean every woman with adenomyosis needs a hysterectomy. Management needs to consider your symptoms, severity, age, fertility goals and whether preserving the uterus is important to you. I’m Mel, the Endometriosis & Fertility Naturopath at Nourishing Apothecary, and I work extensively with women with endometriosis and adenomyosis. If you’d like support, you can book a free discovery call with our clinic. We consult Australia wide via Zoom.
