A moment with history meet exhibit A standing on the left of the photo. It was a true honour to meet Gurinder Singh Mandla, son of Late Sewa Singh Mandla, the father who refused to accept discrimination against his son because he wore a turban and kept his Kesh. In 1978, Sewa Singh took the fight to the courts after Gurinder was refused admission to Park Grove School in Birmingham. After years of legal battles, the House of Lords ruled in 1983 that the school’s “no turban” policy was unlawful indirect racial discrimination. Most importantly, the judgment recognised that Sikhs are an ethnic group sharing a common history, traditions and cultural identity not simply a religious group! One father stood up for his son. That stand helped change the law and protect the identity of generations of Sikhs in Britain.
