When my second started solids I was quickly put into check. Hi, my name is Leah. I’m a Pediatric Dietitian of 10 years and a second time mom. Here are some of the things that I immediately ditched when my second baby started solids (because it was SO different than when I started with my first). 1. The bib - all he wanted to do was eat it and tug on it. I knew that we only have so much time he would tolerate in the highchair so that was one of the first things I immediately ditched. My first never did this so I never had to deal with it! 2. The plate. He was more interested in the plate than the food. And again, I knew we only had so much time that he would want to be in the chair + I wanted to optimize that time as best I could. I know that the mess is going to happen whether I want it to or not, and whether the bib or the plate is there or not. So as a second time mom I’m embracing the mess and focusing on keeping mealtimes positive. 3. The pressure for him to finish his plate. Even doing this round two I realized I had high expectations from my first. I completely forgot just how long this process takes, that they’re still learning and they really aren’t very coordinated yet. So sometimes it takes what feels like five minutes to pick up the food just because it’s so slippery and their fine motor skills are still developing. Follow along if you would like more realistic starting solids tips and feeding advice.
