@thetimes: Is Oxbridge losing its prestige?⁠ ⁠ From the 15th century to the present day, the universities of Oxford and Cambridge have been held up as the ultimate aspiration, and those who graduate dominate the power politics of the UK. ⁠ ⁠ A report by the Sutton Trust, an education charity, found that 75 per cent of senior judges attended Oxford or Cambridge, and 45 per cent of FTSE 100 chairs wandered the quads and courts of these elite universities.⁠ ⁠ But last year, for the first time in the three-decade history of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, both universities slipped out of the top three, landing at joint fourth behind the London School of Economics and Political Science, St Andrews and Durham.⁠ ⁠ The trend has continued this year, with Cambridge fourth and Oxford fifth. It’s a historic slip but begs the question: do they still deserve their status as “the best of the best” — the hardest to get into, and the uni­versities by which schools (and society more widely) measure success?
