The Arabs are a Semitic-speaking people whose historical homeland is primarily the Arabian Peninsula. They are one of the oldest peoples of the Middle East, with references to groups identified as Arabs appearing in ancient Near Eastern sources many centuries before Islam. The origins of the Arabs are deeply connected to the Arabian Peninsula, especially regions such as the Najd, Hijaz, Yemen, and southern Arabia. Ancient Arab societies included many different tribes and kingdoms, such as the Sabaeans, Himyarites, Qatabanites, Lihyanites, Nabataeans, and various northern Arabian tribes. They were never a single unified nation or tribe in ancient times; rather, they consisted of numerous tribes, kingdoms, and communities with related languages and cultural traditions. The Arabic language belongs to the Semitic language family, alongside languages such as Hebrew, Aramaic, and Akkadian. Ancient forms of Arabic and closely related Arabian languages existed in the peninsula long before Islam. Arab history became especially influential in the 7th century CE, when Islam emerged in western Arabia. The Arab-Muslim conquests subsequently spread Arabic and Arab culture across large parts of the Middle East and North Africa. Over many centuries, populations in places such as Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and North Africa became predominantly Arabic-speaking and came to identify as Arab, while retaining much of their older regional ancestry. Therefore, being Arab is not simply a matter of race or genetics. Arab identity has historically involved language, culture, ancestry, tribal connections, and self-identification.
