The system combines: • Legal-specific instructions • A search index spanning more than 230 million URLs • U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions • Partner and community plugins • Reusable legal skills • Evaluations and stricter data controls OpenAI reports 54.0% correctness on its private 200-question evaluation, compared with 38.7% for base Astra using web search. These company-reported results have not been independently audited. The launch includes 26 partner-built plugins, nine community plugins containing 47 adaptable skills, and the general availability of ChatGPT for Word. Initial access is limited to selected law firms through OpenAI's Trusted Access program. API access is planned. Eligible firms can receive Zero Data Retention on the API, while ChatGPT Enterprise usage is excluded from human review by default. The transferable product lesson is bigger than law: 1. Define an authoritative source corpus. 2. Add instructions that encode the domain's working rules. 3. Connect the system to the tools professionals already use. 4. Build a real evaluation set before launch. 5. Add controls appropriate to the consequences of the work. Retrieval quality and workflow integration are the product.
