@expertinterviewers: Hiring managers and recruiters: if a candidate bringing an iced coffee to an interview changes how you evaluate them, that’s probably worth examining. Because this is how interviewing gets weird, fast. Did they bring a drink? Were they too casual? Did they “seem like they were running errands?” Okay. But can they actually do the job? Personal preferences are not hiring criteria. And there’s a little bit of a power trip hiding in some of these unwritten interview “rules.” Our golden rule: flip it around. If a candidate rejected your company because the interviewer showed up holding an iced coffee, would that seem like a reasonable way to make a career decision? Probably not. What’s your take on this? #interview #jobinterview #recruiter #hiringmanager #icedcoffee
All the hiring managers admitting they would throw out the most qualified applicant over an iced coffee are just admitting to be terrible at their jobs.

love your take on this, let's be kind. If it would be weird for a candidate to do it to you, don't do it to them. You can coach them on your personal take on their choice there later, assuming their skills, background and goals align otherwise.

It’s unprofessional. This isn’t even a debate. Wait. Take your interview, get your ice coffee.

as a recruiter with 14 years experience, who has worked with start ups, scale ups, fortune 500 company and top tier investment banks, if a recruiter has an issue with your iced coffee, dont work there, they will destroy your soul and mental health, and them rejecting you is a blessing.

It’s rude. Pretentious. Immediate red flag. Don’t show up with food or drinks.

As someone who is currently unemployed, an interview actually is one of my errands for the day. I show up professionally and at least 5 minutes early. What I do before or after has no relevance, as long as I'm fully present for the interview.

If I don’t get the job because I have a cold beverage with me then I don’t want the job. It’s a clear indication of the work culture there. No thanks.

Wow. Just wow. She said this message is for the one who want to apply to the top 500 fortune cie all button up jobs. Obviously, she not talking about average hiring process. Theses are very specific job that pay well. It like showing up as a lawyer in court in a sweat pant. Of course you are going to be turn down. These job are highly in demand. You are competing with 200 hundred other people who have the same experience as you. It not about experience. It about soft skills.

Maybe I’m too European for this but I can’t imagine sucking on a straw at a job interview….. I arrive early, ask for a water if they offer me a beverage and that’s it

Bring a gallon of milk. When they ask about it, tell them you are lactose intolerant but you have no room in your life for weakness. It really sets the tone.

Corporate HR Tech Director. I do not care if someone brings a non-alcoholic beverage to an interview. I’m assessing their knowledge, skills, and experience…not their drink habits 😂

As a longtime employer - someone who is interviewing should be forward thinking - if you have an ice coffee, then bring an extra to the interview for the interviewer, that’s a team impression. Otherwise get your coffee after the interview - seriously folks, simple creative etiquette and good manners goes a long way.

OK but when people come in my office to interview, I'm drinking coffee and I offer them coffee. What's the difference between drinking our coffee vs theirs?

I'm a millennial, I'm showing up with my drink of choice. Because I'm an adult. I'm going to be talking a lot, and need a drink so my throat doesn't dry up. If you're going to make a big deal about it, I probably don't want to work for you anyways.

Yeah… If someone showed up to interview with me with beverage in hand… I’m not hiring them. Guess what it’s my job to give. I’m not trying to just be kind… I’m trying to find someone I can trust with my business. The recruiters evaluation of this is spot on…. My Homies follow this TikTok trend of taking beverages into an interview and then wonder why you didn’t get the job eventually you’ll find someone who won’t care but it’ll probably be after dozens of interviews. And you likely will have missed out on some really good opportunities.

1. A job interview IS a stop in your errands for the day. My life doesn't come to a grinding halt because you think you might want to hire me.
.
2. I am not being paid for this interview, so if you want to pay me I will put everything else aside, if not then I still have to figure out where my son's tuition, my wifes tuition, and my bills are getting paid.

Overzealous hiring processes that obsess over inane, irrelevant details while losing sight of what actually matters: a person’s ability to do the job.
