The email came during my morning commute. Jakarta was half-awake, gray sky, motorbike horns, the smell of rain mixed with exhaust. I was standing near the train door, scrolling through notifications when it appeared, “Application Result.” I didn’t open it right away. Instead, I got off and walked to the small Roti O near the station. The smell of warm bread filled the air, butter melting into soft dough, a scent that usually reminds me of small victories, not failures. I sat by the window, watching people rush past, pretending not to care while my heart felt strangely heavy. I took a bite, hoping the sweetness could melt the coldness I was about to read. “We regret to inform you” It wasn’t my dream, that scholarship. I applied because I wanted to try. To see if I was good enough. But when the rejection came, it still hurt, not because I lost something, but because it felt like being told I didn’t yet understand what I was looking for. Years later, standing inside Sky Garden in London, I remembered that moment. From up here, the city looked unreal, the Thames flowing like a long, patient thought, the glass towers reflecting a sky that couldn’t decide whether to rain or shine. Somewhere below, people moved like small dots, ordinary lives beneath extraordinary architecture. That was when it came to me: my essay failed because it had no problem. I had written it like a report, not a story. About achievements, not about truth. About what I wanted to do, not what needed to be done. I hadn’t shown struggle, only ambition. Now I understand better. I’ve been trying to listen, not just to my own voice, but to others’. I started reading my company’s RKAP, line by line, and realized how much was disconnected. CSR programs that sounded noble but weren’t aligned with long-term sustainability priorities. Strategies that moved fast, but not deep. I used to think the problem was outside, but sometimes it’s in the system we stop questioning. I also began to pay attention to smaller things, like the old bookshop near my neighborhood in Cimahi. The owner once told me that what he needed wasn’t more customers, but connection. Someone who could bridge stories and people. That made me wonder, how many problems go unnoticed simply because we don’t ask the right questions? I read about Indonesia’s RPJMN, the national plans that try to shape decades into directions. I looked at the Rencana Tata Ruang Wilayah Jakarta, the blueprints of how a city should grow, on paper, at least. And then I compared them to what I saw every day: people rushing, roads flooding, plans forgotten. Some nights, I read the World Economic Forum’s Social Mobility Index, wondering why some nations move faster, why others stay still. It made me realize: the world doesn’t lack data. It lacks empathy. Maybe that’s what my essay missed, not the logic, but the heartbeat. Up here in the Sky Garden, the city hums quietly beneath me. I can almost hear the rhythm of London’s old and new, ambition layered over history. And in that sound, I understand what I couldn’t back then: We don’t write essays or dreams to show perfection. We write them to show we understand the problem, and we care enough to face it. The problem was never the rejection. The problem was that I hadn’t yet learned how to listen. #motivationletter #scholarship #studyabroad #kuliahluarnegeri #beasiswaluarnegeri
