Sri Lankan Puli Curry Sri Lankan Puli Curry, also known as Maalu Miris in Sinhala, is a delicious Sri Lankan Muslim wedding-house-style dish. It is commonly served as part of a traditional wedding rice menu, especially alongside ghee rice. The banana pepper is cooked slowly with onion, tomato, spices, Maldive fish flakes, and lime pickle, creating a delicious balance of flavours. It is not overly spicy but is wonderfully flavourful, especially when served with ghee rice. Ingredients 2 tablespoons oil 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped A few curry leaves A small piece of rampe (pandan leaves) 150g onion, sliced 300g banana pepper/capsicum, cut into lengthwise strips 2 tomatoes, chopped (about 150g) 2 green chillies, sliced ½ teaspoon turmeric powder ½ teaspoon chilli powder 1 teaspoon salt ½ tablespoon chilli flakes, or according to your spice level 1–2 tablespoons Maldive fish flakes 2–3 pieces lime pickle Method Wash the banana pepper/capsicum well and cut it into lengthwise strips. Wash it 2–3 times so that some of the seeds wash away, which helps reduce the heat. Heat the oil in a pan. Add the garlic, curry leaves, rampe (pandan leaves) and a little of the sliced onion. Sauté until the raw smell goes away. Add the banana pepper/capsicum, chopped tomatoes, green chillies and the remaining onion. Add the turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt. Give everything a good mix. Cover and cook for 15–20 minutes without adding any water. Mix frequently while cooking. The tomatoes will release their own water and help everything cook down. Once the banana pepper/capsicum is cooked and most of the liquid has reduced, continue frying until the capsicum is nicely fried and the oil starts to separate. Add the chilli flakes and Maldive fish flakes and mix well. Finally, add the lime pickle and give everything a good mix.
