🤖👁️ “Person of Interest” imagined AI surveillance long before it became a mainstream conversation. When Person of Interest premiered in 2011, its central idea sounded almost impossible: an AI system called The Machine could process enormous amounts of surveillance and communications data, identify patterns, and predict people who might become involved in violent events. And the writers weren't inventing the concept completely from nowhere. Series creator Jonathan Nolan has explained that the idea was influenced by real-world surveillance, data-mining programs and the growing problem of how to process enormous amounts of information. The show even drew inspiration from programs such as Total Information Awareness. By Season 4's “Prophets”, the warning had evolved even further. The episode explores surveillance, prediction, political manipulation and the danger of systems powerful enough to influence human behavior. Today, we still don't have one all-seeing AI exactly like The Machine. But many of the individual technologies are real: 📹 AI-powered surveillance cameras 👤 Facial recognition systems 📍 Location and behavioral data 📱 Connected devices and digital records 🧠 AI systems capable of finding patterns across massive datasets The unsettling part isn't simply that AI can analyze more information. It's who controls that capability, what data it can access, how decisions are made, and what happens when an algorithm gets it wrong.
