@instituteofhumananatomy: Your biggest arteries don't feed muscle directly. They branch down into something much smaller first. 🔬 Here's an anterior view of a right thigh, with some of the quadriceps muscles exposed. Reflect a long, strap-like muscle called the sartorius out of the way, and you reveal the femoral artery, one of the major arteries supplying your lower limb. Now picture the blood traveling down it. Along the way, smaller arterial branches peel off and penetrate the surrounding muscle tissue. And as those vessels keep branching and shrinking, they eventually earn a new name: arterioles. An arteriole is simply a smaller artery, the next step down in your body's incredible delivery network. recently saw a surgery where they had to clean out the femoral artery where plaque was blocking it off!! i couldn't believe how big the artery was!!
