Somewhere deep inside that complex was the Chaos Emerald Eggman had snatched from Angel Island earlier that morning. "Not on my watch," Sonic muttered, a sharp grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. He didn't wait for a plan. Planning was Tails' job. Sonic just moved. With a sudden burst of acceleration, he tipped forward off the rail, dropping straight into a vertical dive. The wind roared in his ears as the ground rushed up to meet him. Halfway down, a squad of Egg-Pawn badniks locked onto his signal, charging their arm cannons. Sonic didn't even slow down. He curled into a tight, glowing blue sphere, hit the steel catwalk, and rebounded in a blinding flash. BOOM. Before the remaining guards could re-aim, Sonic was already a blur of blue motion, running along the glass exterior of the main power spire, defying gravity as he spiraled toward the top. Alarms blared across the complex. Heavy blast doors began to slide shut ahead of him, attempting to seal off the central vault. "Too slow!" Sonic laughed. He hit the floor, dropping low into a Boost. A shockwave of blue light erupted around him, shattering the surrounding sound barrier. He shot through the closing gap with barely an inch to spare, leaving a trail of blue static in the air as the heavy doors slammed shut behind him. Inside the vault, suspended in a magnetic field, hovered the Green Chaos Emerald, pulsing with radiant energy. Standing right beside the control panel was Dr. Eggman, who spun around in shock, nearly dropping his controller. "Sonic?! How did you—" "You really need to upgrade your locks, Eggman," Sonic said, coming to a sudden stop, kicking up a light cloud of dust. "They're way too easy." Eggman slammed his fist on the control desk. "It doesn't matter! The emerald is already powering my new central reactor! You're too late!" A massive robotic arm smashed through the ceiling, dripping with glowing chemical sludge, aiming straight for Sonic's head. Sonic sidestepped it effortless, leapfrogging off the mechanical wrist, twisting through the air, and landing squarely on the Chaos Emerald's containment unit. With a swift, hard kick, he shattered the glass casing. The moment the Emerald broke free, the magnetic field collapsed. Sonic caught the emerald in mid-air, feeling its raw power surge through his hands. "I'll be taking this back," Sonic said, tossing the emerald up and catching it with a wink. "Tell the badniks they can keep the shift off!" "Blast you, blue rodent!" Eggman roared as the facility began to rumble, its energy grid overloading without the emerald's power supply. Sonic didn't stay to watch the fireworks. With the Chaos Emerald tucked securely under his arm, he kicked off the wall, burst through the vault's high-altitude window, and plummeted into the night sky. He uncurled mid-fall, caught a descending wind current, and landed smoothly on the highway heading out of the zone.
