@arisofficehours: The faculty hiring process is super involved and the hard part about it is that you can’t really predict what the committee will need at any given time. #HigherEd #GradSchool #PhD #LearnOnTikTokContest
How does it work for Adjuncts? I applied for a job but never heard back. I'm not stressed, more so curious as to why they would advertise then not hire or communicate.

I once watched a “fake job talk” they had hired this person already I had to schedule their schedule while they were “doing their job talk”.

We shouldn’t take the rejections personally but not getting the job after a campus visit is painful! You spend so much time with the committee, it’s an interview that lasts all day (and into the evening if there’s a dinner), then you don’t get the job and never know why.

I work at a community college, so it’s way different. We use a lot more of a scorecard approach. Then the search committee sends the top rated interviewed candidates forward to the dean, who makes the final choice of who gets hired. It’s weird!

do you have advice for a 3rd year phd student, navigating sexual harrassment and organized harassment, and being worried about not getting hired later because of the social impacts of it

I think the most important thing is the “ can I work with this person for the next 20-30 years” of course this is after fit academically. I have seen the most wonderful candidate come for an interview and blow it because of personal fit.

Yes. The system past the initial screening is not meritocratic. It’s political.

I think I understand your larger point about the factors informing hiring. But… at many institutions all of this does manifest as a “scorecard.” Meaning, the actual complex scoring rubric the search committee is required to use. I’ve been on multiple search committees and we did, literally, score and rank each candidate b

Could you make a video about going up for promotion? I am currently an Instructor (in a PhD program) and hoping to move up to assistant professor in the next 5 years. But I’m a little lost on the process and the nuances!

Great explanation of the process! It’s hard to not take rejection personally, but it’s rarely about the individual. There’s only one job they can give and most of the time the final applicants are all well-qualified. The nuanced discussion of committees can go in so many directions.

The layers are 1) eliminate the unqualified 2) narrow to the more qualified 3) interview for departmental confidence 4) final decision on vibes.

Campus visits are draining and a colossal waste of time. Typically departments bring in 3 candidates, and usually has a preferred candidate in mind. It’s the one-on-one interviews with faculty, meetings with department chair and deans, graduate students, the job talk, lunch, and the dinner. All in two days. It’s exhausting.

I went to a small liberal arts school so we were very close with our professors and the department chairs of my tiny department told me about how hiring works and often involved us students in tenure discussions and hiring decisions.
