Nu-Metal: A Genre That Redefined Heavy Music Nu-metal is a genre of heavy music that emerged in the 1990s and became one of the most recognizable and commercially successful forms of alternative metal around the turn of the millennium. The genre developed primarily in the United States by combining elements of metal with alternative rock, hip-hop, industrial music, funk, grunge, and electronic music.
