The grandfather of Elizabeth Siders’ 16 children has already been found incompetent to stand trial—and now questions are being raised about Elizabeth’s competency, too. Siders is accused of keeping her children in deplorable conditions and faces multiple counts of child endangerment, along with separate sex-related charges involving a teenage relative. Her father-in-law, Gary Siders Sr., was recently found incompetent after an evaluation determined that his cognitive condition was irreversible and that he could not understand the court proceedings. Now, Elizabeth’s attorney is awaiting the results of her psychological evaluation. He says her history of nearly continuous pregnancies, beginning when she was a teenager, along with an alleged lack of postpartum and medical care, may have severely affected her mental health. A competency evaluation does not determine guilt or innocence. It determines whether she currently understands the charges against her and can assist her attorney in her defense. Elizabeth has not been found incompetent, and no insanity plea has formally been entered.
