How has it been 800 days since lamine yamal hit that shot Lamine Yamal’s Euro 2024 was the tournament that introduced the world to a teenager who looked completely comfortable on one of football’s biggest stages. At only 16 years old, Yamal travelled to Germany with Spain and became one of the most exciting players of the competition. What made his campaign so special was not only his age, but the confidence, creativity and consistency he showed against Europe’s best teams. Yamal started Spain’s opening match against Croatia at 16 years and 338 days old, becoming the youngest player ever to appear at a European Championship. Spain won 3–0, and Yamal immediately showed that he was not simply there to make up the numbers. He looked fearless when receiving the ball, taking on defenders and creating opportunities. He also provided an assist for Dani Carvajal, giving Spain an excellent start. As Spain moved through the group stage, Yamal became an important part of Luis de la Fuente’s attack. His ability to stay wide, cut inside, dribble and deliver dangerous passes gave Spain another dimension. In the knockout stages, his influence became even more noticeable. Spain defeated Georgia 4–1 in the round of 16, with Yamal providing another assist. Then came the semi-final against France, the moment that became the defining image of his Euro 2024. Spain went behind early, but Yamal produced something extraordinary. With the ball outside the penalty area, he created space before curling a beautiful shot beyond Mike Maignan and into the corner. At 16 years and 362 days old, he became the youngest player ever to score at a European Championship. UEFA later selected the strike as the Goal of the Tournament. Spain completed the comeback and won 2–1, reaching the final against England. By this point, Yamal had already broken several records, but he still had one more historic match to play. The final took place just one day after his 17th birthday, making him the youngest player ever to appear in a European Championship or World Cup final. Against England, Yamal once again showed why Spain trusted him on the biggest night. He created danger on the right side and continued looking for openings. In the second half, he produced another important moment by setting up Nico Williams for Spain’s opening goal. England eventually equalised, but Spain scored again late in the match and won 2–1, becoming European champions. Yamal finished Euro 2024 with one goal and four assists, the highest assist total in the tournament. He played in all seven of Spain’s matches, starting six of them, and recorded 32 successful dribbles, also the tournament high according to UEFA. His performances earned him the Young Player of the Tournament award and a place in the official Team of the Tournament. What stood out was the way Yamal handled pressure. He did not hide because he was young. He asked for the ball, attacked defenders and kept trying to create chances in the biggest matches. His connection with teammates such as Nico Williams and Dani Olmo also helped Spain maintain a dangerous attack throughout the competition. By the end of the tournament, Yamal had gone from being a teenage prospect to a European champion. He had become the youngest player to appear at the Euros, the youngest scorer, the youngest player to appear in a major international final, and the youngest player to win a major international tournament. He also had the official Goal of the Tournament and the Young Player of the Tournament award.
