I live in Norway. Yeah. Sometimes there’s moose. And sometimes there’s other drivers…

Moose is one thing, but the heat seeking missiles known as deers also come hurling at you and go flying.

funny how the death rates by country are directly correlated to how serious they take the driving test. Norway with the least, then Germany, then US, then Mexico

remember my ice driving test. we had to avoid the moose and the car in the opposite lane and then regain control of the car on the icy downhill road. very fun!
but it saved me 3 years later when I had to drive a slalom between 4 moose on a winter road. both mirrors were smashed in and the entente on the end of the car whipped the snout of one of the moose😂

In Australia you need to pass a theory test which takes about a month to learn. Then you have to get at least 90 hours of driving experience with a qualified driver or instructor. Then 10 hours of night time driving. Also you heed to hold this Learners licence for a year minimum and only then can you attempt the provisional test which mean you can drive alone but not with too many people in the car past a certain time

Makes Australia (nsw specifically) painfully simple. Online test for a supervised licence available at 16. 1 year later and 120 logged hours of driving, 20 at night, and then a practical test before on a restricted licence. 1 more year and another test, which I believe has been lumped in with the first now, for a slightly less restricted and gain demerit points to avoid losing your licence. Finally 2 more years receive the unrestricted. To say nothing about the heavy truck and motorcycle licence

The Norwegian one makes sense. Especially the part about the moose and I’m pretty sure people from Alaska will agree with me on that.

Explain to me why a license expires without it being a money making racket. If the time runs out, do I forget how to drive instantly?

In sweden you need to take a 4 hour corse about road safety, a skidding corse just like the Norwegian one, a written test and a driving test. But before you even get to do that you need to complete an eyetest and apply for a driving certificate before you even get to practice driving. I think there is a requirement for at least 1 practice drive with an instructor too before the actual driving test but I could be wrong about that. The night driving isnt mandatory but beneficial.

My dad is from a more icy state (US) so they would go to empty parking lots and do the skid test themselves to prepare themselves. I learned (and live) in a warmer state and would have no idea what to do—I avoid driving in snow and ice 😂

Norwegian here. on the glattkjøring track you are also required to drive down a hill and purposely hard brake to test if the ABS works.
Nonetheless, glattkjøring is fun.

I generally feel like the US and Canada gives out driver licenses like they are candy. Given the amount of accidents that happen in the US in Canada, and the fact that practically everyone owns an SUV, we should be adopting European standards of road safety and instruction before we give people a license.
