The movie (and of course the comic on which the movie was based) unfortunately underestimated the bravery and the particular approach that the Spartans had towards Life, Freedom, Equality, and above all the Value of Comradeship. And I will simply mention the following incident, which is completely absent from the movie: when Leonidas fell in battle, the Persians tried to take his dead body as a trophy to show to Xerxes. The few remaining Spartans and Thespians made a charge and took back the body of the dead Spartan king. Not once. Not twice. But five times. This act elevates the concept of comradeship that was built in Ancient Sparta to divine levels that a barbarian (non-Greek) could hardly comprehend.
