@chopininstitute: 🎹 One work, two sound worlds. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 in two contemporary performances from the 22nd Chopin and his Europe Festival. Víkingur Ólafsson performs on a modern concert grand with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali. Tomasz Ritter performs on an 1851 Streicher historical piano with {oh!} Orkiestra Historyczna under the musical direction of Martyna Pastuszka. Here, the same score is heard in two contemporary performances. One unfolds in the sound world of a modern concert grand and a symphony orchestra; the other in the meeting of an 1851 Streicher and a period-instrument orchestra. What matters are the details: the breath of a phrase, the colour of the sound, the range of dynamics, tempo and the way the piano answers the orchestra. From the opening E-flat major chord to the final rondo, the same Beethoven unfolds in two different concert situations.
