Per Yngve “Pelle” Ohlin, better known by his stage name “Dead,” was a Swedish singer and songwriter who became one of the most recognizable figures of the early Norwegian black metal scene. He was born on January 16, 1969, in Västerhaninge, Sweden, and grew up in the Stockholm area. From a young age, Pelle was described as an unusual, highly individualistic, and introverted person who often seemed to have a world of his own. He developed a strong fascination with heavy metal, horror, darkness, death, fantasy, and subjects that were considered unusual for someone his age. His interest in extreme music eventually became the center of his life, and as a teenager he began looking for increasingly darker and heavier forms of metal. Rather than simply wanting to become a conventional rock singer, Pelle wanted to create an atmosphere that felt genuinely frightening, cold, mysterious, and connected to death. This vision eventually became one of the defining characteristics of his musical identity. Pelle’s childhood and teenage years were not always easy. Accounts from his family and people who knew him describe him as a quiet, withdrawn, stubborn, and deeply private person. He was reportedly bullied during his school years, and his brother Anders Ohlin later spoke about the difficulties Pelle experienced while growing up. One of the most frequently discussed events from his childhood was a serious medical incident that was later associated with his fascination with death. Different accounts of this event exist, and some details have been told differently over the years. His brother described Pelle suffering a serious internal injury connected to bullying, while other stories have circulated about an accident involving ice. Pelle reportedly experienced a period in which he was considered clinically dead before being revived. Whatever the precise circumstances, death became a subject that occupied an unusually important place in his imagination, and this fascination later became deeply connected to his artistic identity. He did not simply use death as a lyrical theme; he incorporated it into his appearance, stage performances, lyrics, and overall artistic philosophy. As a teenager, Pelle became increasingly interested in extreme metal and began listening to influential bands such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Venom, Bathory, Sodom, Metallica, and other bands that helped shape the developing extreme-metal movement. He was particularly attracted to music that sounded aggressive, dark, raw, and different from mainstream rock. In the mid-1980s, he became involved in the Swedish underground metal scene and eventually became the vocalist of the death/thrash metal band Morbid. Morbid was formed in Stockholm in 1986, and Pelle adopted the stage name “Dead,” a name that reflected his fascination with death and the identity he wanted to create as a musician. With Morbid, he recorded material that would later become important to collectors and followers of the early Swedish extreme-metal scene, most notably the demo December Moon, recorded in 1987. Although Morbid did not achieve major commercial success and eventually fell apart, the experience gave Pelle the opportunity to develop the vocal style and dark aesthetic that would later make him famous. In 1988, Pelle moved from Sweden to Norway after joining the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. Mayhem had already developed a reputation within the underground scene, but Pelle brought something distinctly different to the group. As “Dead,” he developed an extreme stage persona that was intended to make him appear less like an ordinary human performer and more like a corpse that had somehow appeared on stage.
