To be fair, it was a weird situation. Giving Dragonstone to Renly could’ve looked like Robert was naming him heir, since Robert had no children yet. The fairest solution would’ve been to give Stannis Storm’s End and let him hold Dragonstone until Robert had a son old enough to take it. Renly really shouldn’t have inherited anything with two older brothers ahead of him. But I kinda understand Robert’s logic. He wanted both brothers established as powerful lords, strengthening Baratheon control over the Stormlands and Dragonstone, and Stannis was the better choice to keep the remaining Targaryen loyalists under control. So it wasn’t completely irrational. Robert was just extremely generous to Renly and didn’t understand how insulting it would feel to Stannis.

I never really understood why Stanis and Renley or even at odds with each other they could’ve joined their forces and solve their problems later😂 like let’s be real. Renley isn’t gonna have any true children and considering people already know what happens when people question whether a future king might be a bastard rather than a legitimate child and how that happened during the dance of the dragons should’ve kind of set him straight
