@explainingourpast: Cretaceous echinoid fossils in Texas are evidence of a completely different world beneath our feet. 🌊 During the Cretaceous, shallow seas covered large areas of Texas, and echinoids—ancient relatives of modern sea urchins and sand dollars—lived on the seafloor. After they died, their hard skeletons could be buried by mud, shell fragments, and sediment. Over time, that sediment became rock, preserving some of them as fossils. Today, those fossils give us a glimpse of the ancient marine environments that once existed across Texas. #echinoid #fossil #cretaceous #geology #discovery
