On 4 May 1984, a quiet drive along a rural road near Westby, Wisconsin, took a horrifying turn when three teenagers discovered the body of an unidentified woman abandoned beside the roadside. The victim, believed to have been between 50 and 65 years old, had suffered devastating blunt-force injuries that left her face unrecognisable. Investigators also found that both of her hands had been deliberately removed, leading them to believe the killer was trying to prevent identification through fingerprints. She was estimated to stand between 5'5" and 5'6", weighed roughly 150 pounds, and wore dentures. She was dressed in a colourful coat over a black dress with a blue-and-white paisley design, a light blue turtleneck, nylon stockings, and tan slip-on shoes. Even more unsettling, many of the clothing labels had been cut away, and the buttons appeared to be unusual, suggesting someone had intentionally erased clues about her identity. Years later, forensic experts uncovered another intriguing lead. Pollen recovered from her clothing matched plant species commonly found in the American Southwest, indicating she may have travelled from far outside Wisconsin. Investigators exhumed her remains in 2015 to take advantage of modern DNA technology. A year later, Arizona State University released a forensic facial reconstruction in the hope that someone might finally recognise her. Despite advances in forensic science, she has never been identified. The DNA Doe Project initially handled the genetic genealogy investigation before the case was transferred to another specialist provider in 2023. Who was she, and who worked so hard to ensure she would never be identified? #UnsolvedMystery #TrueCrime #ColdCase #Mystery #JusticeForJaneDoe Source: @therabbitholeofcrime
