Since 2015, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 has required a licensed guide, the result of decades of vandalism at one very specific tomb. That tomb belongs to Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. In life, she was a free woman of color, a hairdresser to the city's wealthiest families, and a devout Catholic who blended her faith with Voodoo practice; a combination that gave her influence few people in 19th-century New Orleans could match, across every level of society, Black and white, rich and poor. People came to her for healing, protection, love, and revenge, and she rarely turned anyone away. Her daughter, also named Marie, is believed to have carried on the same name and practice after her, which is part of why even historians still debate where one Marie's story ends and the other's begins. Her influence didn't end with her death in 1881. People never stopped coming to ask her for favors. The ritual is specific: three X's scratched into the stone, three knocks, an offering left behind and if your wish comes true, you're supposed to come back and thank her, or risk her wrath instead. Because the water table here sits just inches below the surface, nobody in this cemetery is buried underground, every tomb stands above ground, baking in the Louisiana sun for over two centuries. Visitors report crying sounds from sealed vaults, cold spots with no explanation, and shadowy figures moving between the tombs after dark.
