Instead of digging harder into a tight jaw muscle… teach it to let go. This is a "lateral pterygoid release," and it is one of my favorites for people who carry a lot of jaw tension. The lateral pterygoid is a deep muscle involved in jaw movement and coordination. If you clench, grind, have TMJ tension, or rely heavily on your jaw to compensate, this area can get VERY tender. Here is how to gently release it: 👉 Wash your hands first. 👉 Place your pinky's inside your cheeks. 👉 Turn your fingernail toward your upper back teeth. 👉 Gently slide your finger up and back. 👉 Find a tender area. 👉 Apply comfortable, steady pressure for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes. You can partially close your jaw or gently curve your pinky to change the angle. But!!!! Harder is NOT better. You do not need to attack the muscle until you are crying for the release to “work.” 😂 You want the pressure to feel tolerable enough that your body can actually relax into it. You are not just trying to smash on a tight muscle for temporary relief. Side Note: You also want to look at why it keeps tightening in the first place. That may mean working on: - Breathing - Nervous system regulation - Tongue function - Jaw coordination - Strength and stability #JawRelief #MuscleRelease #TMJSupport #StressRelief #BodyAwareness
