@keriberry_: Being a seasoned T1D mom, trick-or-treating might seem simple now… but I remember when it wasn’t. 🥹🧡 When Kinny was first diagnosed in July, her first Halloween, Thanksgiving, and every holiday that followed felt overwhelming. The extra treats, the blood sugar highs and lows, and managing everything with MDI before a pump made those firsts feel SO scary. Now, we let our kids be kids. We go trick-or-treating, enjoy the treats, give insulin as needed, and sometimes chase those stubborn highs. But I know how much easier that sounds when you’ve been doing this for years. So, to the newly diagnosed T1D families navigating your first holidays: Give yourself grace. You don't have to have it all figured out right now. Take it one day, one holiday, and one first at a time. Your kids can still make beautiful memories, and you don't have to navigate this journey alone. We're here for you. 🧡 #T1DMom #NewlyDiagnosedT1D #Type1Diabetes #T1DParenting #T1DCommunity

My son was just diagnosed in February and this is our first year. We have made the decision to not let diabetes take his childhood away from him. If we have to treat a high because he wanted the Halloween candy then that’s what we will do. We aren’t going to restrict him with anything.

Our son was diagnosed at 2y/o and his endo immediately told us to not restrict him at all. Let him eat what he wants and what he normally does, just give insulin.

Hello my friend! I have a question, did she go through “the honeymoon phase”? Where her body still made a little insulin? Or it was just full blown no insulin?

Even before T1D we didn’t just go crazy on the candy. We had a few pieces that night, but the rest was saved for snacks and dessert and was eaten just a few pieces at a time. We have the kids go through their candy, pick their favorites to keep, and then dump the rest into a pile for the “Switch Witch” who comes overnight and trades the candy for toys, coloring books, etc.

Yes I agree with you 100% We used Halloween last year as a collection for low treats as our first year as my son just celebrated his first year in august of this year & so this yr will be our first holiday year on a pump & probably will still do it the same way with the same idea because you never know how your days are gonna go as T1D it can always unpredictable pump or no pump I’d personally say as a T1D mom that I’ve learned so far

This will actually be our first Halloween with t1d. He has a pump and we are more confident. Yet, going into each holiday for the first time is still a little scary and sad because I remember what it was like the previous year without t1d 💔. We try to keep a yes mentality so that t1d doesn’t take over life in a negative way.

yup and deep breaths and remember they are small portions that can be sprinkled in lunches as a couple treats or with dinner and after school snacks when you can add protien and times they will be running and playing. some can be added to the low snacks....but just let them have fun and be kids. 💖💖

I couldn’t have said it better myself. The holidays are challenge spending the weekend with grandmom is a huge challenge for me because I tend to let them eat whatever they want. I’m getting better.
