@pollar.news: On Friday the president of the United States posted that CNN, Politico and MS NOW were banned from the White House. On Saturday morning their reporters were stopped at the gate and their press passes were confiscated. The room he banned them from has forty-nine assigned seats. He does not assign them. The White House Correspondents' Association has done that since the Reagan administration, when fixed chairs replaced the old lounge furniture. Last year his office tried to take that chart over and hand the seats out by audience size. The reporters refused. That chart never came. It did not need to: in January 2025 the White House had already added a fiftieth seat at the front of the room, for podcasters and influencers, and it fills that one itself. This February the reporters redrew the room on their own terms. 66 outlets, 49 chairs, 33 of them changed, seven newsrooms seated for the first time. Four British newsrooms had a chair in 2022. Six have one now. The front row did not move. The fourth chair in that front row belongs to the Associated Press. In February 2025 the AP was barred from the Oval Office and Air Force One for refusing to stop writing Gulf of Mexico, and the White House was explicit that it would keep its press pass. A judge ordered the doors reopened. An appeals court put that on hold, two to one: the president's own rooms are not public forums, so he may choose who comes in. The same two judges drew a line. The briefing room is opened to the press generally, and there he may not. So the chairs were never his to take. Nobody took a chair. They took the passes. The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." It does not say the executive branch must provide front-row seats, microphones, and taxpayer-funded building access to every media company that demands it. The excluded organisations are completely free to broadcast, publish, write, and criticise the President from their own offices. Their freedom of the press is untouched; they just no longer have a VIP pass to the West Wing.
