My parents did not charge me rent at 18. AND when I was in my 30s and sold my house at the peak of the housing market they let me come live with them for several months rent free so I could put in very solid offers on my next house. I’m very thankful to them and I pay things forward to others when I can.

Giving the money back is the ONLY way that it makes sense to charge your CHILDREN rent. I've never offered to pay rent with my parents because they are fiscally irresponsible and none of that money would be used for the house, it would all be used for random shit my mother wanted from QVC.

A parent charging a kid rent is horrific. I understand that in some situations, help is necessary, such as in a low-income household. If you want the kid to contribute, maybe have them pay for utilities and groceries if they can. But rent is diabolical.

better than the actual rent I got charged i never got back. but I think charging rent either way makes it harder for the kid to move out if they want to, it's better to not charge and support with budgeting

I live rent free with my parents. But if ever I wasn’t like doing something, my dad would start charging me rent to get my ass in gear. I also get to stay on the family phone plan as long as I’m going to school, which is forever.

I had a summer job and during during that time and while I did not have to pay rent O had to decide what percentage went into my savings account and I did 70/30 70% in savings 30% in my account and its the best thing I did qnd when I get a new job I will do it again

Love this idea will be doing with my kid, but starting younger I’ve seen moms on here start when they’re about 10 and getting an allowance and save all of it for her!!

I plan on charging my child “rent” at 13, but I will be giving him an allowance monthly and using it as a means of teaching financial literacy. I’ll save it and give it back to him.

I think if you continue to pay rent and understand the value and what they’re teaching you, you wouldn’t build resentment. And when you’re out on your own you’d understand they taught you responsibility and the reality of life while getting a lump sum haha
