TV5 is under fire for using music and visuals generated with artificial intelligence (AI) for a new morning show. Gandang Mornings with Ate Koring, hosted by Korina Sanchez-Roxas, premiered on October 12. The talk show takes over the 11 a.m. slot previously occupied by Face to Face with Ate Koring, also hosted by Sanchez. The show’s intro features an AI-generated song and accompanying visuals of two singers surrounded by a festive crowd. TV5 included a disclaimer noting that the segment contained AI-generated content. Netizens criticized TV5 for the AI-generated intro, saying it looked uncanny and came at the expense of creative concepts. “As a media company, dapat mas alam niyo ang kahalagahan ng creativity at originality. Dapat kayo ang nagpo-promote ng talento at nagbibigay ng oportunidad sa mga creative professionals,” said Threads user @sabsabidukong. The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), the self-regulatory industry group to which TV5 belongs, generally embraces the ethical use of AI in the industry. “Consistent with its commitment to responsible broadcasting, KBP supports the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, guided by the same principles that govern all content under its standards,” the KBP says in its statement of values published on its website. The Poynter Institute, a leading global authority on journalism ethics, encourages newsrooms to publicly disclose their use of AI where possible. However, it cautions against relying heavily on AI for visual content. “The use of visual generative AI tools exposes newsrooms to the most risk in regards to audience trust,” the institute says in its AI Ethics Guidebook.
