😱 Intimidé par un léopard de mer ! Alors que je naviguais seul en packraft entre les icebergs, une grosse tête noire a soudain surgie hors de l’eau juste devant moi. 🦭 Plus gros qu’un phoque et pouvant peser jusqu’à 400 kilos, un léopard de mer est reconnaissable à sa tête de reptile et son cou allongé. On dirait une créature d’un ancien temps ! C’est l’un des prédateurs les plus féroces de l’Antarctique. Pour se nourrir, il rôde auprès des manchots qu’il attrape avec vivacité et qu’il déchiquette avec ses dents acérées dans de grands mouvements circulaires. Quand il a vraiment faim, il se nourrit même de jeunes phoques. Il a aussi la fâcheuse tendance à mâchouiller les zodiacs qui auraient été laissés à l’eau la nuit. 🔃 Pendant une dizaine de minutes, il a tourné autour de moi en passant sous mon packraft sans jamais me quitter des yeux et en faisant surface toutes les 30 secondes. J’étais à la merci de sa curiosité. Le léopard ne m’a pas menacé, mais il m’a testé. Il m’a reniflé, m’a regardé. Il était si proche que je pouvais le toucher. Un coup de croc dans mon embarcation gonflable et j’étais à l’eau. L’espace d’un court instant, j’ai eu l’étrange sensation de devenir une proie. Une impression que l’on éprouve rarement, nous humains qui nous pensons au-dessus de tout le règne animal. 🤿 En 2003, une biologiste britannique de la base Rothera explorait la station en plongée libre. Avec sa combinaison en néoprène, un léopard qui trainait par là, l’a prise pour un manchot. La jeune femme n’est pas revenue, elle s’est faite attrapée et entraînée dans le fond… 🛶 Lentement, j’ai pagayé en arrière vers la côte pour prendre congé de mon hôte. Il m’a suivi jusqu’à ce que j’arrive auprès des rochers et dans un ultime plongeon il est reparti dans les profondeurs. Un sentiment de vulnérabilité qui vous remet à votre juste place. ‘The Gravity of Curiosity’ is an invitation to remain curious; to pull at the edges of the world we know and discover what might exist beyond it. At the centre of this dreamlike original artwork, a young elephant does exactly that. With its trunk, it catches the torn edge of an apparently ordinary undefined reality and pulls it downward, revealing an extraordinary universe hidden behind the surface. The gesture is playful, but the idea beneath it is deeper: curiosity is often the force that allows us to see beyond the limits of what we have been shown. Beyond the torn canvas lies a surreal world where scale, gravity and logic no longer behave as expected. Hidden within the abstraction is one of the artwork’s smallest narrative details: a tiny human figure leaps from a sweeping strand of paint, attempting to reach the hot-air balloon above. It is an almost absurdly ambitious act, and deliberately so. The figure becomes a symbol of the human instinct to explore, to take chances and to reach for something that may initially appear impossible. The Gravity of Curiosity ultimately celebrates wonder, imagination and the courage to question what appears certain. It suggests that curiosity has a gravity of its own, quietly pulling us toward places we have never been, ideas we have never considered and possibilities we cannot yet see.
