@daily.historian: General Douglas MacArthur sought to deploy nuclear weapons against China during the Korean War to break the operational stalemate caused by China's intervention in late 1950. Rejecting the Truman administration's doctrine of limited war, MacArthur argued that allowing Chinese forces sanctuary across the Yalu River made conventional victory unattainable. In December 1950, he formally requested theater discretion over atomic weapons and submitted a list of Chinese supply hubs and troop concentrations as priority targets. His operational proposal entailed dropping thirty to fifty atomic bombs across logistical depots and airbases along the neck of Manchuria. After neutralizing enemy airpower, he envisioned deploying amphibious forces and Nationalist Chinese troops to secure the border. To prevent future reinforcement, MacArthur planned to lay a belt of radioactive cobalt from the Sea of Japan to the Yellow Sea, creating an impassable barrier intended to isolate the Korean peninsula for decades. President Harry S. Truman and the Joint Chiefs of Staff rejected the plan over concerns that bombing Chinese territory would trigger Soviet intervention under the Sino-Soviet treaty, precipitating a global war. Washington prioritized European security and refused to commit strategic nuclear stockpiles to an expanded Asian conflict. MacArthur's open resistance to these civilian policy constraints resulted in his dismissal in April 1951. https://f.mtr.cool/llhjii8luy https://f.mtr.cool/6moc5458rm
