@ravenhawk.echo: Only Child Marine PFC Haig Sarafian was Killed in Action on September 19, 1944 at Peleliu, he was 18 years old and was posthumously awarded the Silver Star… Born in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania to Armenian genocide refugees Puzant Sarafian & Elizabeth Kistorian on September 23, 1925, Haig Sarafian was their only child. Their father left them, and at the age of seventeen he enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1943. After training, Haig served in C Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division He saw action on Bougainville and then was stationed on Guadalcanal before departing for Peleliu. Haig landed on the beaches at Peleliu on September 15, 1944 and fought in the brutal combat against the entrenched Japanese. He was Killed in Action four days later on September 19th, four days before his nineteenth birthday during the assault on Hill 100. His remains were never recovered and PFC Haig Sarafian is Memorialized with the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines. He also has a memorial marker at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts.
