What do you associate New York City with? The birth of graffiti? 9/11? The many films and tv programs set there (ghostbusters? Friends?) The art scene (Harring, Basquiat, Warhol?) CBGB’s and the birth of punk? Well my first wall in Manhattan in ten years has soaked up the memories of all the above. Within spitting distance of CBGB’s, Kat’z deli, Basquiat’s apartment and Beastie boys square. And all sitting over the iconic entrance to the 2nd Ave subway step. Edit kindly offered to bring me here to exhibit my work at the affordable art fair (open til Sunday!) so I lined up some walls and and packed my bags. As with all my eye murals I didn’t plan the reflection. The right person always pops up in the process of painting and this wall offered plenty of options. ‘Eric B’ was a strong contender. Eric lives on a bench in the middle of the road opposite the wall. He spent a lot of time with us while I painted, interrupting his self titled role of traffic conductor to share his wisdom and make suggestions. But ultimately, I chose Iman, who ran the hotdog stand next to the wall. She greeted us with a wonderful smile, fed the homeless ‘Dollar man’ who spent his day begging by her stand and even sheltered my wife when an inevitable ‘interaction’ (that happens when you’re painting on the streets) got a little bit uncomfortable. She told of her life running the stall, her family back home in Egypt and her volunteer work. But, ultimately, my use of Iman was a nod to all the invisible people of a city. Those that make it happen with none of the fanfare. And while Eric wasn’t the subject of the wall. I took his suggestion of ‘adding some birds’ and did just that. It’s the first of three walls in three days here NYC. Huge thanks to Edit, Ben, Audrey, Jo and all that made this pinch me moment happen. I’m so very lucky.
