His death is absolutely heartbreaking. But what happens next troubles me deeply. Western Australia has issued an extraordinary order to hunt down and KILL the shark — despite great whites being a protected species. Why? Because authorities say this individual shark poses an ongoing threat. But think about this. Australia recorded 435 human homicide victims in 2025. We don’t condemn an entire species because one human kills another. Yet when a shark attacks a human who has entered ITS habitat, suddenly that individual animal is sentenced to death. A great white doesn’t understand beach boundaries. It doesn’t understand that humans have decided this stretch of ocean belongs to swimmers. And shark attacks can happen for different reasons — including investigation or mistaken identification. We simply cannot know what motivated this particular shark. It is a wild predator, living and hunting in the environment it evolved to inhabit. Protect people. Close beaches. Use drones, tagging and shark-warning technology.
