@liying596 recounts her brief conversation with her family about her pregnancy and the fact that her baby is half Black. I’m sharing this today because, although we don’t often discuss it here, this is a VERY common question we receive. That question is: How do Asian families feel about having a mixed-race Black child in their family? To clarify, MY ANSWER DOES NOT REPRESENT THE ENTIRE ASIAN COMMUNITY. What is acceptable in one family may not be in another; it all hinges on the individuals involved. Reactions from Asian families towards mixed-race Black children can vary significantly, SOME ranging from profound acceptance and love to, in some instances, hesitation or prejudice often stemming from traditional beauty ideals (which favor lighter skin), cultural differences, or misunderstandings about race. While many families wholeheartedly embrace these children, others might show curiosity or, in certain situations, anti-Black bias. In some Asian societies, like China, Japan, and Taiwan, mixed-race children (particularly those of Black descent) may be perceived as outsiders, sometimes labeled as “foreign kids” or “dolls” (xiao wa wa), even if they are proficient in the local language and culture. Nevertheless, many Asian families are working through these cultural hurdles, increasingly focusing on confronting and overcoming anti-Black bias within their communities for SOME who has it. I will be hosting a different but slightly the same talk on @kmusicandblackwomen for any of my Black sisters that are interested in traveling. I know the old owner has left a lot of holes, misleading information that I do want to clear up for some curious minds. #blackandasiansoulsunite #BlackTikTok #asian #chinatiktok
