Ater an Ice Age ends, the planet warms up. This is a natural occurance. Besides, St. Mary's was downgraded to an Ice Flow back in the early 2000s.

This is me standing on top of the glacier in July of 2024, it was so big it took me about 10 minutes to climb to the top. How heart breaking.

In the 8 years I’ve lived in CO, you can 100% see the climate change. It makes my heart sad. I’m so thankful to be able to see St Mary’s Glacier a few times.

Question - if these glaciers have been around for hundreds/thousands of years, wouldn’t you want to stay away because of the potential diseases that have been freed that we’ve never seen in our lifetime? I genuinely know nothing about this kind of thing so I’m seriously asking

Blows my mind people don’t understand earths natural warming and cooling periods the ice age was 20,000 years ago we are now in a warming period interglacial period and then it will go back to another glacial period at one point well before manmade greenhouse gas was a thing earths natural warming melting all the ice caps

Just cause it was called a glacier doesn’t mean it was an actual glacier. But yes we need more snow. Let’s hope El Niño does its usually trick! Rivers and lakes need the meltwater. I feel a wet heavy snow winter coming!

I hate to say, I moved two years ago, for new adventures and cooler temperatures, working in the increasingly hot temps on the front range and water restrictions. It makes me sad the snow fields and glaciers are expediently disappearing. Hiked 1000s of miles in the state. I prey for the raven I met on Rowe’s glacier, unique experience. I will sob when it’s gone. Many prays for feet of snow.

St. Mary’s was one of my favorite places to walk. I remember in 1982, the first time I was there, kids sliding down on their parkas. We would walk through thigh deep snow to sit and just look at the trout in the lake and the glacier where the two crests met. I have pictures of my daughter and husband sitting at the falls there when it had noticeably gotten smaller around 2004. It sad that it’s gone. I have so many good memories there. 💕

We went up there every year to teach mountaineering students how to glissade. It was never an actual glacier. But sad to see it give way.
