When Ichigo reacted with panic and anger, his own family looked at him with confusion and pity, severely gaslighting him into believing that he was the one losing his mind or acting like a monster. This psychological warfare directly attacked Ichigo’s core motivation, which has always been his desperate need to protect his friends. Tsukishima completely subverted this dynamic; when Ichigo tried to attack him to protect his friends, Chad and Orihime stepped in to shield Tsukishima. Ichigo was forced into an agonizing paradox where the very people he wanted to save were putting their lives on the line to defend his tormentor. This pushed Ichigo into severe cognitive dissonance, taking place right when he was already feeling vulnerable after losing his Soul Reaper powers. The torture peaked when Ichigo fled in panic to Kūgo Ginjō, the only person he thought he had left to trust, only for Ginjō to reveal that their entire alliance was an elaborate trap. The psychological toll broke Ichigo completely. For the first time in the series, the usually stoic hero fell to his knees in the pouring rain and openly wept out of pure, helpless despair and rage.
