@kporter.stuff: Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, commonly called UHMW PE, is a specialty plastic that outperforms many metals in wear and friction critical applications, thanks to its unusually long polymer chain structure. This covers why UHMW PE has such a low coefficient of friction and high abrasion resistance, where it typically gets used in conveyor systems, guide rails, and low friction bushings, and the practical limitations engineers need to know, including poor high temperature performance and difficulty bonding with adhesives. 🙌🏼⚙️ #materialscience #mechanicalengineering #DFM #productdesign #plasticsengineering

People use this on the bottom of river boats for running over logs rocks ground etc.. I have to get some for my mini jet boat

Everyone wonders why stainless parts wear out when they are rubbing against plastic. They all think the stainless should last forever and we just replaced the plastics. This stuff grinds down stainless easily over time.

crazy fun facts. we CAN'T replicate the stuff in actual joints. The friction coefficient is even less than ice!

they make absolutely great padding for metal slings and nylon slings for lifting heavy objects too. but do not set an extremely heavy load 2025 tons on top of it unless it is securely fastened and leveled because it does slide very easily.

I was a designer of “lotension” spiral conveyors, some of which had over a mile of 3-4 foot wide conveyor belt in a helix. The drive was a capstan principle, and the drums could be 15 feet diameter and 40 feet tall. All run by friction over MILES of UHMW extrusions!

all the plastics smell different when you melt them with a soldering iron. If you dont know which plastic youre dealing with, melt a bit of it and compare the smell of it to stock sample melts. true
