I recently watched the What Bitcoin Did podcast break down the Coldcard attack, and I had four big takeaways: 1. It was way too technical for the average everyday person. There is absolutely a place for in-depth technical discussion. But if we want broader participation in Bitcoin, we also need people who can translate these conversations for the everyday person who wants to understand what is happening and why it matters. 2. The technologists did not believe this attack would be replicated across mainstream hardware wallets. That is an important distinction. A vulnerability involving one particular device or implementation does not necessarily mean hardware wallets generally face the same vulnerability. 3. The guests acknowledged that wallets are trusted third parties. That caught my attention. If we acknowledge that some level of trust exists when using a wallet provider, I think the average person is naturally going to ask how that trust differs from the trust they place in an exchange. 4. This is an opportunity for the Bitcoin community. Rather than simply telling people they need to self-custody, we should be asking how we can make self-custody more secure, understandable and accessible to the average everyday person.
