Before this day, all my life in the Nigerian military have been in the barracks. Only to keep watch of the gates and sometimes give escorts and among other assignments. I have never engage in any gun battle before apart from the training we do have every week. Not until I was deployed to Maiduguri Northeast of Nigeria around 2017. Before then, I have had so much news about how the military will engage terrorists for several hours on gun battle but have never experienced it. It was on the 13th June, 2017 around 4:15Am here in Northeast of Nigeria. Our commander received a distress call while we were still lying in our camps of an attack going on in one of the military camp situated in a community of about 25-30km ahead of our camp. After the call, the commander immediately blow the war alarm, we all got up prepared ourselves and got ready to make swift response. Before we took off, the commander assembled all of us and said, not everyone will go out for this battle atleast, 10men should stay back and watch the camp. Then, he proceeded to select 30men as report says the terrorists were about 150+and unfortunate for me, I was selected among the 30men. Suddenly alot of taught began to run over my mind, alot of questions came up.... then I said to myself, What you have been hearing and reading on the internet have finally reached you. I also taught about death...infact I was so scared. The worst thing that happened that day was when I took my phone to call my mom, but her number was switched off. I tried to reach so many people infact I just needed to inform anyone from my family about my situation but at that moment I discovered i was left alone so I dropped backed my phone. When I returned to my senses, I could hear the commander say

I tried to reach so many people infact I just needed to inform anyone from my family about my situation but at that moment I discovered i was left alone so I dropped backed my phone. When I returned to my senses, I could hear the commander say " Remeber who you are, remember where you came from, remember why we need to fight, remember your family, your friends, remember even your girlfriend who's waiting for you to come back home. Finally remember you are trained and you are professionals. Keep the formation and obey the command. So help us God. Then we took off. Each hilux had 8 personnels in it. 2 at the front, 2 behind and 4 sitting at the back. We also had 2 personnels carrying machine guns. Two hilux where ahead of the one I was, and when I look through the window, I saw how men where sitted in silence and the one beside me was already praying, immediately I began to pray in silence. Immediately we touch down the ground, we began to engage the terrorists who were already shooting sporadically. Then our commander had ordered us to shoot on sight. After some hours of fire exchange, alot of terrorist were down and because of our heavy fire power, the terrorists began to withdraw in to the bushes. I was so happy that we have survived the battle with no casualty from our side, only 2 personnels from the other camp were down. Unknowingly to us, they had reinforced themselves and mounted ambushes. As we were about to form another tactical formation, and to reload our magazines, suddenly, there where shooting of RPGs and firing of sophisticated machine guns from different angles. This completely scattered our formation, we began to lose our men. It was another fresh battle and this time was more intense than I taught. This time, our commander was hit among other personels but he survived the gunshot. Not less than 8 personnels died in this battle and several others injured. But God stood by us in this battle and gave us victory at last. Among this terrorist were little young children who have been hypnotized into fighting for what is not worth it. Glory to God i survived the battle unhurt I am alive to tell the story. RIP to the fallen heroes. Anytime I see this picture I would always recall that very day. The war I have never experienced, today I have fought it over and over and as long as I am alive, I will continue to fight for my nation, my family, my friends and all my loved ones. 8years in Maiduguri no be 8days... #Kano #lagos #abuja #maiduguri
