A year ago today, my heavenly best friend, Pier Giorgio Frassati, was declared a Saint! Make friends with the Saints - their intercession is powerful. And remember: Adoration (latria in theology) is the worship and homage that is rightly offered to God alone. It is the manifestation of submission and acknowledgement of dependence appropriately shown towards the excellence of an uncreated divine person and to his absolute Lordship. It is the worship of the Creator that God alone deserves. Veneration (dulia in theology) is the honor and reverence appropriately due to the excellence of a created person, like Mother Mary and the other Saints. The devotion a person has to God’s saints does not end with the saints themselves, but rather reaches ultimately to God through the saints. It is pleasing to God and, ultimately, it gives Him glory when we honor those who excelled in love of Him. God delights in involving us in His providential designs. Exactly as Christian communion among our fellow pilgrims here on earth brings us closer to Christ, so too our communion with the Saints in heaven joins us to Christ. God is not in competition with us or our relationship with the Saints, rather He delights in it and even channels His grace to us through their intercession. I can say that my life has been so much richer through cultivating friendships with the Saints. They are here for us, championing us on - that beautiful host of heaven - awaiting the day we can join them in perpetual praise of our Father. Another beautiful thing to remember is we are always invoking the Trinity at the beginning of every prayer - whether a prayer directly to Christ or a prayer asking the intercession of His Saints - when we make the sign of the cross. We also do this all the time here on earth when we ask someone, “will you pray for me for...” How beautiful to do the same with people who have been declared to be experiencing the Beatific Vision! Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati, pray for us!
