@preamnairblog: C. A. Panicker From Malabar to Malaya Have you heard of C. A. Panicker, a man who played an important role in the early history of Kedah? Born in 1889 in Tattamangalam, Malabar, India, Panicker came to Malaya in 1911, when he was about 22 years old. At that time, Malaya's rubber industry was growing rapidly. Panicker built his career as a rubber estate manager, working with several estates in Kedah. He was also trusted with important legal and administrative responsibilities. But his life was not only about rubber. He became the first vice-chairman of the Malayan Estate Asiatic Staffs' Association and later chaired the association in Kedah, representing Asian staff working in the plantation industry. He was also involved in public life. Panicker served in Central Kedah, supported medical associations in Bedong and Baling, and became connected with Muda Press in Sungei Patani. He also served as president of the Kedah Indian Association and chairman of a Hindu temple in Sungei Patani. From a young man who travelled from Malabar to Malaya, Panicker became a plantation manager, community leader and public servant. His story is a small but interesting part of the history of old Malaya a time when rubber estates were growing and towns like Sungei Patani were developing. C. A. Panicker was one of the people who helped shape that history.

We stayed near his bungalow in Bedong. His daughter and her family were residing in the bungalow. It had a big garden, just off the old road from Sungai Petani to Alor Star. 7 miles from Sg Petani. We walked past this bungalow everyday after school. His family was respected. The Son-in-law was a doctor in the Bedong Group Hospital in the early 1960's. He was also a Justice of Peace(JP). I remember the daughter, very elegant lady and very kind.
