THE WEST WING’S FAMOUS BIBLE SCENE WAS INSPIRED BY A REAL-LIFE CONTROVERSY One of The West Wing’s most memorable confrontations came in the 2000 episode “The Midterms.” President Jed Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen, confronts fictional radio personality Dr. Jenna Jacobs after she cites Leviticus to condemn homosexuality. Bartlet responds by pointing to other Old Testament laws—forcing the question: Why are some biblical passages treated literally while others are not? But there’s a backstory. Jenna Jacobs was modeled in part on real-life radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who had drawn controversy for her statements about homosexuality. And much of Bartlet’s argument was adapted from an “Open Letter to Dr. Laura” that had circulated widely on the early internet. (Wikipedia) More than 25 years later, it remains one of the scenes people remember most from Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing. Whatever your politics or religion, it was television designed to make people argue—and think. ##TheWestWing##MartinSheen##JedBartlet##AaronSorkin##ClassicTV
