Sometimes, I wish I could experience what it feels like to have a father who is truly there, even if it were only for a little while, just once in my life. I wish I knew what it felt like to come home and have someone waiting for me, to hear my father ask how my day was, to have him notice when I was quiet and ask what was wrong. I wish I had someone to call when I was scared, someone whose presence alone could make me feel safe. There are so many moments when I have felt the absence of a father without anyone knowing. When I see girls being hugged by their dads, being protected, teased, encouraged, or proudly introduced as their daughters, I quietly wonder what it would have been like if that had been me. I wonder what it would feel like to hear my own father say, “I’m proud of you,” and actually believe that I was worth being proud of. I wish he had been there for the small things the days I needed advice, the times I needed comfort, the moments when I simply wanted to feel like someone’s little girl. Instead, I learned to grow up without waiting for anyone to come and fill that empty space. I learned to wipe my own tears, make my own decisions, and pretend that I did not need the love I was missing. But the truth is, I still do. There is still a part of me that wonders why his absence had to become something I learned to live with. I never wanted money, grand gestures, or anything extraordinary from him. I only wanted his time, his attention, his arms around me, and the simple reassurance that I mattered to him.
