@steve.kimani95: The Mamayev Kurgan monument in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) is a mountain of concrete and steel born from the bloodiest confrontation in human history. Formally named the Memorial Complex "To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad," it stands today as a solemn monument to the 200 days of brutal fighting that turned the tide of World War II. During the battle, which raged from July 1942 to February 1943, this hill was designated on military maps simply as Hill 102. Rising high above the city and the Volga River, it held immense strategic value. Whoever controlled the hill controlled the artillery lines over the vital factories and shipping lanes below. This tactical importance turned the hill into a relentless meat grinder, conquered and reconquered dozens of times over 135 days of direct combat. The artillery fire was so intense that it reshaped the topography, stripping the hill of its vegetation and blending the soil with millions of shards of shrapnel. When the battle ended in a decisive Soviet victory, the earth was so heavily saturated with metal and human remains that grass refused to grow. The hill had become a massive collective grave, holding the bodies of more than 35,000 fallen defenders. In 1959, the Soviet Union broke ground on a massive memorial project to honor this sacrifice. Sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin designed a multi-layered symbolic journey up the scarred landscape. To reach the summit, visitors must walk up exactly 200 granite steps, with each step representing a single day of the grueling siege. The path winds past massive, expressive stone installations, including a defiant soldier emerging directly from the earth, and high-relief ruined walls that echo with wartime audio broadcasts. This path culminates at the Hall of Military Glory, a vast cylindrical structure where an Eternal Flame is held aloft by a massive sculpted hand, surrounded by the inscribed names of thousands of the dead.At the very crest of the hill stands the crowning achievement of the complex: The Motherland Calls. Unveiled on October 15, 1967, the colossus depicts an allegorical woman stepping forward with a raised sword, her face contorted in a fierce battle cry as she summons her children to defend the nation. Standing 85 meters tall, it was the largest free-standing sculpture in the world at the time of its completion. Engineering the statue was a triumph of physics; Nikitin constructed it out of prestressed concrete, relying entirely on its 8,000-tonne weight to stay balanced on its pedestal without deep underground anchors.Today, Mamayev Kurgan remains a deeply revered historic site. It stands not only as an architectural masterpiece, but as a towering reminder of the unimaginable human cost of the Battle of Stalingrad.

The Motherland Calls is 52 m tall, with a 33 m sword, making it 85 m overall. Mamayev Kurgan was originally 102 m above sea level, with another 16 m added during construction, resulting in the sword’s tip reaching roughly 203 m above sea level.
