Old me almost let one deal convince me my whole career was over. A unit that some has tried and couldn’t move. Sat on the market for a year before I took it on. I brought the seller two offers in under six months and one got accepted. Then it unravelled. A structural issue baked into the unit decades before me, through six or seven owners, invisible on every record I could check. And suddenly I was the one being blamed for things I couldn’t have known, predicted or prevented. I spiralled. For a while I really believed it was the end of me as a realtor. Old me would have taken every bad outcome personally. I went through countless of hours of talking to other lawyers, PE, architects, various friends in the construction industry and even calling different authorities to try to find out what solution there could be. While I was definitely trying to be helpful but deep down I knew, I felt like I needed to “fix” this, like this was all my fault. A deal gets complicated = what did I do wrong?” A client is unhappy = “I should have prevented this.” Something outside my control happens = somehow I’d still find a way to make it my fault. Old me thought being accountable meant carrying the blame for everything.. New me still talks to herself critically. I still ask “what could I have done better?” But I’m learning to separate accountability from self-blame. I can learn from a mistake without taking responsibility for things I couldn’t have known, predicted or controlled. Still learning this one. 🤍
