I often get asked whether I re-ink the plate between prints. I do! If I don’t, the ink left on the plate gives me a second, much paler image, known in printmaking as a ghost print 👻 When I’m printing an edition, I re-ink each time so the prints are full strength and as consistent as possible. Here I show you what the print looks like if I don’t re-ink. Ghost prints definitely have a place in printmaking. It depends on the plate and how much ink it holds. Some collagraph plates are very thirsty, and the first print can be quite muddy. Sometimes that second pull is actually the one you want to keep as your main print. Other times, a ghost print becomes a starting point to print over or add chine-collé. So while this one is quite pale, it’s not always a less useful print.
