I think part of why it’s “dated” is that people are taking it literally. Like they’re standing around and waiting for their turn. In DND, they’re not actually doing that. Each turn is supposed to represent 6 seconds of a nonstop fight.

Turn based has always been peak. I honestly enjoy turn based combat more than action combat sometimes(Devil may cry is my main exception)

Science of Fantasy :
This, I think, is a result of gaming being so intertwined with the rise in graphical capability that gamedevs wrote off a "simple" system as outdated. They were always positioning themselves to prove how complex gaming *could* be to outsiders. They saw turn-based systems as "finished" with no need to follow up and expand on what *those* could be with a little more creativity. Now, after repeatedly hitting graphical ceilings, and with innovations becoming smaller and smaller, devs are finally looking at what they left behind, and are trying to innovate laterally through art direction, combat systems, story design, and the like as fans have repeatedly told them to.
